Liverpool 2-1 Ajax: The Reds leave it late at Anfield

Liverpool beat Ajax with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday at Anfield. Liverpool arrived at the match looking to pick up more points after losing their last match 4-1 to Napoli. Ajax had been hopeful of extending their winning run, after a 4-0 victory against Rangers. both teams are now on 3 points and occupy 3rd and 1st places respectively after 2 matches.

The Reds started the first half well, when Mohamed Salah gave them the lead on the 17 minute mark. However, their celebrations were kept brief, as Mohammed Kudus equalised for Ajax, 27 minutes in. The score at break remained 1-1.

Liverpool continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and were rewarded, when Joel Matip found the net just before the final whistle. When the final whistle blew, the result was 2-1 to Liverpool.

Substitutions for Liverpool included Roberto Firmino, Darwin Nunez, James Milner and Stefan Bajcetic for Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Thiago, respectively. Ajax brought on Jorge Sanchez, Florian Grillitsch and Brian Brobbey, to replace Devyne Rensch, Kenneth Taylor and Mohammed Kudus.

There were bookings for Joel Matip from Liverpool, and Edson Alvarez and Steven Berghuis, for Ajax.

Ajax and Liverpool will next play at home to Napoli and Rangers respectively.
