Newell’s 2-2 Patronato: Old Boys fail to hold on to two-goal advantage

Newell’s were held to 2-2 draw by Patronato down on Tuesday at Estadio Marcelo Bielsa. Both sides arrived on the back of wins. Newell’s were keen to hang onto their position at the top of league and extend their winning run after winning their previous two games against Estudiantes La Plata away and Argentinos Juniors at home, by 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. Patronato were looking to extend their winning run after a 3-1 victory against Independiente. As the table looks today, Newell’s and Patronato currently occupy 2nd and 14th spots in the league, with 14 points and 8 points respectively after 6 matches.

It was an impressive opening from Newell’s, thanks to a goal from Gustavo Velazquez early in the first half. They then scored again, increasing their advantage thanks to a goal from Ramiro Sordo just before halftime. The score at half time was 2-0.

Patronato staged a comeback in the second half, with a goal from Sebastian Medina at the 55 minute mark. Patronato then scored again and snatched an equaliser thanks to a goal from Raul Alberto Lozano just before the final whistle to make it 2-2.

Substitutions for Newell’s included Cristian Ferreira, Martin Luciano, Genaro Rossi, Luciano Cingolani and Facundo Mansilla for Francisco Agustin Gonzalez, Leonel Vangioni, Juan Manuel Garcia, Ramiro Sordo and Juan Sforza, repectively. Patronato brought on Lucas Kruspzky, Jonathan Herrera, Alexander Sosa, Carlos Quintana and Juan Pablo Barinaga, to replace Facundo Cobos, Marcelo Estigarribia, Axel Rodriguez, Sebastian Medina and Franco Leys.

There were bookings for Juan Manuel Garcia, Willer Ditta and Luciano Cingolani from Newell’s, and Facundo Cobos, for Patronato.

Newell’s will next travel to CA Platense, while Patronato will face Arsenal de Sarandi at home.
