Atletico Madrid 0-2 Villarreal: Los Colchoneros humbled at home by The Yellow Submarine
Atletico Madrid fell to a home defeat at the hands of Villarreal at Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday. Both Atleti and Villarreal arrived in good form, having secured victories in their previous matches. Atleti had been hopeful of continuing their run, following a 3-0 victory against Getafe. Villarreal, on the other hand, were able to continue their winning streak after a 3-0 win against Real Valladolid in their last match. As things stand, Atleti are in 7th place in the table and have 3 points while Villarreal sit in 1st with 6 points after 2 matches.
After an uneventful first half, Villarreal continued to pile on the pressure in the second and were rewarded, when Yeremi Pino found the net at the 73 minute mark. The Yellow Submarine then scored once more and increased their advantage thanks to a goal from Gerard Moreno just before the final whistle to make it 2-0.
Substitutions for Atleti included Rodrigo De Paul, Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa, Matheus Cunha and Jose Gimenez for Thomas Lemar, Marcos Llorente, Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata and Stefan Savic, repectively. Villarreal brought on Francis Coquelin, Alex Baena, Samuel Chukwueze and Jose Luis Morales, to replace Etienne Capoue, Giovani Lo Celso, Yeremi Pino and Nicolas Jackson.
The referee booked six players. Joao Felix and Jose Gimenez from Atleti, who saw yellow cards and Nahuel Molina, sent off with a red, as well as for Villarreal Dani Parejo, Alex Baena and Gerard Moreno also seeing yellows.
Villarreal and Atleti will next play away to Getafe and Valencia respectively.
