Wigan Athletic 1-4 Middlesbrough: Boro deliver emphatic away win at Wigan

Wigan Athletic suffered a home defeat to Middlesbrough on Wednesday at Dw Stadium. Both Wigan Athletic and Boro came from defeats in their previous league games. Wigan Athletic were looking to get back to winning ways after losing their last match 2-1 to Sunderland AFC while Boro had lost their previous match against Blackburn Rovers. Wigan Athletic are currently 17th with 19 points from 16 matches, while Boro sit in 20th, with 16 points from 16.

Wigan Athletic didn’t take long to get on the score-sheet, when Will Keane gave them the lead, 34 minutes in. However, Boro then grabbed a goal from Isaiah Jones just before half-time, which brought Leo Percovich’s squad level at 1-1 at the half time break

The Boro started strong in the second half and were able to dominate, with a goal from Duncan Watmore in the 51st minute. Boro looked to have the match under control when they scored again to grab the advantage, thanks to a goal from Hayden Hackney, at 57 minutes to establish a 3-1. However they weren’t finished yet and Chuba Akpom made it 4-1, 69 minutes in to give a final score of 4-1.

Substitutions for Wigan Athletic included Graeme Shinnie, Nathan Broadhead, Callum Lang, Josh Magennis and Jason Kerr for Tendayi Darikwa, Charlie Wyke, Joe Bennett, Will Keane and Callum Lang, respectively. Boro brought on Marc Bola, Alex Mowatt, Rodrigo Muniz, Anfernee Dijksteel and Riley McGree, to replace Duncan Watmore, Matt Crooks, Chuba Akpom, Isaiah Jones and Hayden Hackney.

There were bookings for Curtis Tilt from Wigan Athletic, and Chuba Akpom and Matt Crooks, for Boro.

Wigan Athletic will next travel to Queens Park Rangers, while Boro will face Huddersfield Town at home.
