Sunderland AFC 2 – Wigan Athletic 1: Home fans rewarded with victory at Stadium of Light

Sunderland AFC beat Wigan Athletic with a 2-1 victory on Saturday at Stadium of Light. Both sides arrived at the match with previous defeats in the league. Sunderland AFC were looking to get back to winning ways after losing 2-1 to Swansea City in their previous fixture. Wigan Athletic were beaten 3-1 in their previous match against Cardiff City. Sunderland AFC and Wigan Athletic sit 9th, (20 points) and 13th, (19 points), in the league respectively, after 15 matches.

Wigan Athletic started well, when Charlie Wyke gave them the lead just before half-time to see out the first half 1-0.

Sunderland AFC started the second half with renewed vigour, with a goal from Elliot Embleton in the 54th minute. However they weren’t finished yet and Dennis Cirkin made it 2-1, at 72 minutes to make it 2-1.

Both managers used all available substitutions. Substitutions for Sunderland AFC included Amad Traore and Bailey Wright for Lynden Gooch and Elliot Embleton, respectively, Wigan Athletic brought on Josh Magennis, Thelo Aasgaard, Ashley Fletcher and Graeme Shinnie to replace Charlie Wyke, Curtis Tilt, Nathan Broadhead and Tom Naylor.

There were bookings for Elliot Embleton, Alex Pritchard and Anthony Patterson from Sunderland AFC, and Curtis Tilt and Will Keane, for Wigan Athletic.

Sunderland AFC will next play Blackburn Rovers away, with Wigan Athletic facing Middlesbrough at home.
