Sheffield Utd 5-2 Burnley: No mercy for The Clarets as The Blades win big
Burnley fell to an away defeat at the hands of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Both teams arrived at the challenge after previous wins. Sheffield U were looking to pick up points after winning their previous two matches in the competition. The most recent was against the Bristol City away (1-0), the other to West Bromwich Albion away (2-0). Burnley were coming from consecutive wins against Rotherham United and Reading. Sheffield U are now in 2nd place, with 35 points from 20 matches, while Burnley sit in 1st, with 38 points from 20.
The first half of the match started favourably for The Clarets, when Manuel Benson found the net, 17 minutes in. However, the good fortune didn’t last for long. An equalizer from Iliman Ndiaye, 30 minutes in brought Sheffield U level. However, Burnley then grabbed a second effort from Manuel Benson just before half-time, to take a 2-1 lead into half time.
Sheffield U started strong in the second half and were able to dominate, with an early goal from Oliver McBurnie in the 48th minute. The momentum was again with Sheffield U, who then scored again courtesy of a goal from Jack Robinson in the 64th minute to establish a 3-2 result. The Blades looked to have the match under control when they scored again and increased their lead, thanks to a goal from Anel Ahmedhodzic, at 69 minutes to establish a 4-2. The Blades then scored once more and increased their lead thanks to a 2nd effort from Oliver McBurnie, 74 minutes in to give a final score of 5-2.
Substitutions for Sheffield U included Chris Basham, Billy Sharp, Andre Brooks and Ollie Arblaster for Enda Stevens, Oliver McBurnie, George Baldock and John Fleck, respectively. Burnley replaced Johann Gudmundsson, Halil Dervisoglu, Charlie Taylor and Connor Roberts with Samuel Bastien, Nathan Tella, Manuel Benson and Anass Zaroury.
There were bookings for Enda Stevens and Oliver McBurnie from Sheffield U. For Burnley, Joshua Cullen, Nathan Tella and Jack Cork saw yellow.
